Town Spotlight! Millville, MA

6/4/2020 (Permalink)

Spotlight of the week, Millville Massachusetts We're glad to be able to serve towns like Millville and surrounding areas!

Millville, MA, 01529

Millville is a little town nestled in the Blackstone Valley along the Rhode Island border. According to DiscoverCentralMa.org, Millville was settled in 1662, but is really Massachusetts' "youngest town" because the town was not incorporated util 1916 after people of the town wanted to separate from Blackstone.

Millville is home to the only intact lock from the Blackstone Canal. These locks allowed boats to travel through the canal even when the elevation changed. You would enter the lock, allow it to fill up, then exit out the other side where the water would be level.

In the 1800's the Blackstone Canal provided a way of transporting goods. Following World War II and the manufacturing of goods moving to the south, the Town's mills started to decline.

Fun Fact!! Charles Leo (Gabby) Hartnett, who was born in Woonsocket, RI, eventually growing up in Millville, went on to play for the Chicago Cubs and the New York Giants!

According to the 2019 Census, Millville's population was 3,242. Definitely lower than its neighboring areas like Uxbridge, Blackstone, and Rhode Island city of Woonsocket.

If you were to take a walk around Millville today, you'd find ruins of old mill foundations and sections of unused railroad that was once used to transport goods. In the town's beginnings, it was a very important piece of transportation and commerce in the Blackstone Valley during the Industrial Revolution.
