Different types of smoke damage that can affect your company.

6/24/2021 (Permalink)

When fire damage affects your property, a large amount of smoke damage is leftover by charred flames, causing a lingering effect of smoke. There are four different types of smoke damage that can be caused by fire damage. Fueling materials and different locations.

  • Dry Smoke

Dry smoke is created by fast-burning, high-temperature fires that are typically fueled by paper or wood.

  • Protein Residue

Protein residue is created when organic material evaporates during a low-heat fire. This is common when a cooking mishap causes a blaze in the kitchen.

  • Fuel/Oil residue

When a furnace has a “puff back” where it doesn’t ignite properly and ultimately releases smoke and soot into the surrounding space in the form of a small leak or even minor explosion.

  • Wet Smoke

Wet smoke damage comes from low-heat, smoldering fires, commonly when burning plastic and rubber.

If smoke or fire damage has caused damage to your property, call SERVPRO of Southern Worcester County and we will be ready to help restore your property and needs "Like it never even happened."

Keeping your office clean and organized! | Blackstone, MA

7/27/2020 (Permalink)

Commercial and residential water and fire cleanup and restoration - we are ready  24/7

Most of the time, we spend a ton of time in the office, so it's like a second home. Keeping your desk as clean as you keep your countertops at home is important for productivity and just overall environment! It's been shown that having a cluttered desk can cause stress and decrease productivity. Which makes sense, if you're shuffling through piles of paper every day to look for that one, you're doing less work and causing stress for yourself.

Keeping a checklist of daily tidying tasks can help you stay on track as well!

Clear your desk daily! After each workday, clear off your desk of any paperwork for the day, put it in it's own file folder, and recycle any paper you don't need anymore. Then, coming in tomorrow, you'll have a nice, clutter free desk!

Keep your electronics organized: In this day and age, it's not only important to have pens, pencils, highlighters... handy, but also our tablets, work cell phones, etc. Having these things at an arms reach, and organized will save you some time searching around for them.

Keep a cleaning cloth handy: Having the supplies on deck will help you actually get the simple cleaning tasks done. Say you're on a conference call, you can simply wipe your desk down in no time, and cross that off your checklist for the day!

Sticky notes, the MVP of office supplies! Sticky notes can not only be handy when you need to jot some things down quick, write a list, and clean your keyboard!

Use the sticky part to get any dirt, debris, or crumbs out of your keyboard. Keeping your keyboard clean is quite important to keep germs at bay. Especially during times like these.

It's recommended that you wipe down your keyboard with a disinfecting wipe at least once a week, but more is better! (During this COVID-19 pandemic, we would recommend every day, if not multiple times a day!)

Keep your chair/s clean and disinfected! Whether you're in an office by yourself that no clients see, or especially if you do have clients in your office, you'll want to clean your chairs regularly. Daily, or after each client, you should spray down your chairs with a disinfecting solution. Every month you should do a deeper clean for the chairs. First, you'll want to make sure you're using the proper technique. Most chairs will have a letter indicating what you can use to clean it.

W- you can spot clean the chair with water based products

S – you can use a solvent or water-free product. Such as a dry cleaning product

X – you can not clean this yourself, it has to be professionally cleaned

C – you can only clean this chair with a light brushing or use a vacuum. This can not be cleaned with water or solvent cleaners.

Try to keep a cleaning schedule for your office, it's basically your home for the day/work week, so you might as well keep it clean and tidy while you're there! Vacuum weekly, and pick up any spills right away, and remember to keep your space organized!!

If cleaning and sanitizing concerns go beyond what you can do or the janitorial staff can handle, give us a call at 508-234-3399, we'll get your office looking brand new and clean when we're done!!

Mold and your Commercial Space | Mendon, MA

7/13/2020 (Permalink)

Mold in your Mendon commercial space Only highly trained professionals should be handling the mold remediation process

Before we talk about preventing mold, let’s talk about mold itself. What is it? Where can it grow? How does it grow? Should I try to get rid of it myself if I see growth in my Mendon business space?

What is mold?

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Molds are part of the environment that can be found basically anywhere oxygen and moisture are around. Molds are a fungi and are present indoors and outdoors. Some molds are good, like the ones used to make medicine such as penicillin, but other molds can be harmful to our health.

When mold is present indoors, like in your house or office space, that is usually a sure fire sign of water damage. Mold can grow on a variety of materials, even paper!!

Where does mold grow?

Mold can grow anywhere. All it needs is a little bit of moisture and it’ll thrive (and not in the good way when it comes to your property). Mold can grow inside or outside. The mold spores can get into your home from open doors, windows, your clothes…

Building materials are prime real estate for mold to grow. This can include wood, insulation, wallpaper, carpet and more.

How does mold grow?

When mold spores are introduced to an environment where there is moisture, they will begin to grow into colonies (the green or black spots we usually see).

Should I try to remove mold myself?

It is NOT recommended to DIY remove mold. It can be dangerous to your health if you aren’t trained properly in mold remediation. At SERVPRO of Southern Worcester County, we are highly trained in the mold remediation process, and we will safely and effectively remediate the mold problem in your commercial space or home!

Preventing mold growth in your commercial space

While mold spores are present everywhere, it is possible to reduce your risk of mold growth.

  1. Keep your eyes open: keep your eyes open and create routine plans for inspections around your property. Mold can grow in as little as 24-48 hours!
  2. Stay up to date on repairs: if you notice a leaky window or doorway, or anything coming from the roof, get it repaired right away! Letting moisture build up will lead to mold growth, which is a bigger, more expensive problem to fix.
  3. Decrease moisture and humidity: run dehumidifiers if the humidity level is always high in your building, especially in basements. This will keep the levels low and keep the area dry.

If you come into contact with any mold at your Mendon commercial space, give us a call at 508-234-3399, we’re highly trained in mold remediation and here to help!!

The Importance of Property Maintenance at your Milford Commercial Space

6/25/2020 (Permalink)

Why you should keep up with your Milford property maintenance Give us a call at (508) 234-3399 if the damage or cleaning goes beyond the scope of your janitorial or maintenance staff!

Keeping your Milford property maintained

If your property is a rental (such as apartment or condo complex) you'll really want to keep it looking nice and pretty! This can include cleanliness, air quality (no smells circulating through the ventilation system), everything looks good, no holes in the wall, no stains on the carpets etc. This way, potential (and current) renters will be attracted!

Keeping your office/commercial space neat and tidy is important too! Your property maintenance is important to residents, employees, and guests. It's also a reflection of your business which is therefore a reflection of yourself!

It's best to look into a maintenance company for your commercial space (if your budget allows) so you can have a regular set of eyes on all things maintenance just in case something were to happen.

What types of maintenance will I need to take care of?

Typically for a commercial space, you should have regular maintenance on the roof, light fixtures, hot water heaters as well as regularly cleaning/ sanitizing of bathrooms, break rooms, and cubicles/offices.

What if I don't maintain my property?

If your property is looking a bit...disheveled, passersby will probably think less of your business, just by the building!! Your property value can also decrease, and you could run into major maintenance issues that could have been caught early and even prevented!

If your Milford commercial property suffers from any damage beyond the scope of your maintenance or janitorial crew, give SERVPRO of Southern Worcester County a call at (508) 234-3399, we're here to help, even after hours so you don't have to halt business!

Spring Cleaning for your Milville Warehouse

3/9/2020 (Permalink)

warehouse shelving and forklift driving by Happy Spring Cleaning!

Spring is (almost) in the air! That also means spring cleaning should be on your to-do list at home and at your warehouse! No matter if your warehouse is for building materials, machines, retail warehouses or any other kind of materials, it should be kept clean just like your home! After all, it is your business and probably your “second home”. When you clean your warehouse it’ll improve safety and efficiency!

First things first, get the dust, debris, and trash out!

Since the winter season is dying down (even though we got minimal snow) there is probably still salt, mud, dirt and other “dirt” inside your warehouse making it look less than attractive. Alongside not making it look clean, the dirt and debris can get into machinery, possibly causing the gears to have problems, and other issues can come into play.

Like at home, taking the trash out when it's cold, wet, or dark out seems less than appealing to do. But if you do it right away, you won’t come into work to it the next day! Rather than letting trash and scraps pile up in the back of the warehouse, take care of it right away so you don’t have a huge pile to get rid of at the end of the day/week/month.

If your budget doesn’t allow for calling a cleaning company in, you can use your staff to help out with the cleaning! Make it fun for them so it’ll get done efficiently and no corners will be cut.

  • Split the staff up into teams
  • Assign them each a task
  • Have an incentive at the end for each team!

Deadlines

One good way to avoid doing a few days of just cleaning at the warehouse, set goals and deadlines. Have certain tasks done by a certain date or day of the week. This’ll make it easier to do “spot cleaning” or cleaning as you go.

If your warehouse requires more help than just you and your team (not that you can’t handle it) SERVPRO of Southern Worcester County offers commercial cleaning services! Give us a call and we’ll be happy to help make it easy for you and we'll do the cleaning!

If you suffer a commercial business or office disaster and need disaster cleanup right away call SERVPRO of Southern Worcester County 508-234-3399. Let us try to make your day brighter and have Brian help you fast.

If you have any suggestions or anything you’d like to learn about from us, send us an email or send us a message on Facebook!

Home & Business Cleaning Hack - Toothpaste

6/25/2019 (Permalink)

Non-gel toothpaste might just be the answer to your prayers or requests. Toothpaste has made it onto loads of blogs and websites because of its power to remove stains and whiten. This is primarily due to the baking soda within the toothpaste. That's why so many dentists recommend brushing with baking soda - it's cheap, easily accessible at the store, and it's something we probably already have in our home or apartment.

Toothpaste Hacks:

  • use it to clean your white sneakers or converse. Grab a damn sponge and scrub, or leave toothpaste on the affected area outside to dry for a few hours. Then, all you have to do is shake off the dried up, powdery toothpaste. BAM - good as new.
  • Use an old toothbrush (I think it goes without saying) and some toothpaste to scrub the tiled floors in your home or business.
  • Use toothpaste to polish your jewelry
  • Use toothpaste to clean your phone screen (just a little bit!).
  • If you work in a music venue or museum with pianos, or have a piano at home you can use toothpaste to clean those keys.
  • Clean the office mugs with toothpaste so all your employees are pleasantly surprised when they come in on Monday.
  • FUN FACT - apparently toothpaste clears pimples...we at SERVPRO will have to try this ASAP.

10/15/2018 (Permalink)

Water damage can be from a flood, septic system problems, a broken pipe, or a faucet mistakenly left on. It is important to take care of this as quickly as possible to prevent mold, mildew and structural damage.

Initial Cleanup

Take immediate action before professional help arrives. One thing you can do is open your windows to aid in the initial drying process.

Next, remove excess water by mopping or using a wet-dry vacuum (do not use a regular household vacuum to do this). You should also wipe down any wood furniture and remove wet upholstery/cushions and other water-logged materials from the affected area. These simple steps will begin the drying process, but professionals with heavy duty equipment can more fully restore your home.

Besides the headache from dealing with physical water damage, there are other issues to consider:

Health Hazards

Mold and mildew are two very common problems that will occur after water damage. It only takes a few hours, especially in high humidity for these to start growing. Mold and mildew can cause health effects. A professional service will have the high capacity fans and vacuums to remove the water from your site before it has a chance to saturate construction materials and leave them prone to mold.

Structural Damage

After a home has been impacted by water damage, it is possible for the entire structure of the house to be weakened. Again, it’s important to dry the home thoroughly before this happens. After the cleanup, it is advisable to have a professional come out and assess the structural condition of your home.

If you or someone you know is experiencing any of these issues, please contact SERVPRO of Southern Worcester County at (508) 234-3399. We offer 24-hour emergency service and are more than happy to help you with your water damage repair and restoration.

Preventing Wind & Storm Damage in Northbridge, MA

9/19/2018 (Permalink)

Summer and fall weather in New England can be unpredictable. High-velocity winds, hurricanes, and severe thunderstorms can damage your business property in a matter of minutes. Here are a few preventive measures from SERVPRO of Southern Worcester County that can help lower the risk of damage to your commercial property and save you money in repairs and lost productivity.

Protect Your Roof

To make sure your company's roof is protected against wind damage, have it inspected for the following:

  • Shingles need to be wind and impact resistant. They also need to be securely nailed down and fitted tightly together.
  • Make sure the connection between the roof and walls is tight enough to keep updrafts from lifting off the roof.
  • HVAC units, skylights, and pipes are tightly affixed and would not be blown off.

Exterior Walls and Doors

  • Ensure the building is well-sealed to prevent the wind from getting in cracks and crevices, causing interior damage.
  • Check Siding and windows to be sure they are tightly attached.
  • All entry doors are triple-hinged and secured with a deadbolt lock for maximum windstorm protection. Overhead doors are braced sufficiently and able to withstand high winds.

Outdoor & Indoor Areas

  • Everything you have stored outside (such as equipment, inventory, and supplies) is anchored or can be easily moved inside if a storm approaches.
  • Dumpsters, outdoor lighting fixtures, and fencing are secured.
  • Large shrubs and trees close to your building are healthy and unlikely to damage the building
  • If your building has a basement, make sure that basement windows and doors have built-up barriers or flood shields to prevent water damage.

What to do After a Storm

  • Remove standing water and all moist materials, such as wet, damaged flooring or rugs, carpet, personal property, stock, equipment or inventory, and consult a licensed building professional who can determine the extent of the repairs necessary.
  • Board up damaged windows and doors.
  • After you have dealt with the immediate crises, contact your insurance agent to report the loss and obtain advice about restoration. Depending on your policy, commercial property insurance should cover any damage to your building or other business property caused by a windstorm.

The outside of the building may have survived the storm, but inside water intrusion may have soaked documents, computers and other valuable supplies. Water damage can threaten the ability to quickly bounce back after a storm. Should your building become damaged by a catastrophic event such as wind-driven rain, take appropriate actions to prevent further water damage by calling SERVPRO of Southern Worcester County at (508) 234-3399!
